Private tours to see the Burrowing Owls live run from November through April. Tours last about 2 hours and are very handicap-friendly as there is minimal walking involved. We visit about 10 different burrow sites, and there is plenty of time to take photos.
We are often about 30 feet from the burrows, so plan camera lenses accordingly. Tours usually start at 8:00 am. Most visitors are passing through, on their way to or from the airport, or have limited time to see the owls. Since these tours are private, start times are very flexible and can even start at sunrise or sunset for avid photographers.
It is suggested you wear closed-toe shoes as we might encounter some fire ants. This is rare, but if the situation warrents it, we may get off the beaten track a little bit.
The cost of the tour is $50.00 for a single person. If there are 2 or more people in the party, the cost is $40.00 per person. Credit cards cannot be accepted as there is not always Internet available. Four tour groups such as photography clubs of 6 or more people, the cost is $25.00 a person. A box lunch can be provide for an additional charge.
Children under the age of 17 are free of charge, and there is no charge if no owls are seen. I have been conducting tours for quite a few years, and I have a 100% success rate, but since these are wild animals, I cannot guarantee the sightings.
Unless there is a severe storm or hurricane, the trip can go on even from the confines of a car. Light rain and drizzle is not a deterrent and people have taken some pretty cool photos of the owls having a bad hair day! Trips that are cancelled due to weather can usually be rescheduled.
You will learn a lot about the owls on the trip, but for an indepth book on everything you wanted to know about the owls, check out the difinitive guide to the Burrowing Owls of Cape Coral, FL
